What is Screencasting and how do you use it in the classroom?
Taken right from Wikipedia: A screencast is a digital recording of computer screen output, also known as a video screen capture, often containing audio narration. The term screencast compares with the related term screenshot; whereas screenshot is a picture of a computer screen, a screencast is essentially a movie of the changes over time that a user sees on a computer screen, enhanced with audio narration.
Continued from Wikipedia: Screencasts can help demonstrate and teach the use of software features. Creating a screencast helps software developers show off their work. Educators may also use screencasts as another means of integrating technology into the curriculum. Students can record video and audio as they demonstrate the proper procedure to solve a problem on an interactive whiteboard.
In the classroom, screencasts can be used in different ways. The teacher might choose to screencast a lesson as it is presented on the digital whiteboard for students to refer to later as a tutorial. The screencast could be posted to a class webspace or to you tube for student access at a later date. You can just imagine this tool being ever so valuable for that student who misses a particular lesson as they could view the screencast and be filled in with all the detail of what they had missed.
Students can learn to screencast as well. They would begin with a storyboard design of sorts to plan out their screencast and then 'cast' the session. Subsequently, a teacher or other class members would view the screencast and assess the student's understanding of the topic.

How to make a screencast...
We will be using a simple screencast tool appropriately named Screencastomatic...yes, Screencastomatic! It's all in the name! Although there are other tools listed as links below, this one is especially easy to use and allows up to 15 minutes worth of recording which is really more than you should need. If you were to want screencasts longer than this you might want to break your video tutorial into parts or segments.
It would be recommended to plan your screencast lesson ahead of time using a storyboard graphic organizer just to make sure you included everything you wanted the first time. As it would save valuable computer time, it would be highly recommend that students were to storyboard their presentation prior to the actual recording session.

How to post a screencast...
You can access screencasts from the computer on which they were generated or use a flash drive to move recordings to another computer. To allow for more free access to your screencasts you should consider posting them on to a web source. We will learn how to upload screencasts to You Tube...especially now that most of our schools are adjusting filters to allow for in school access. If you have a Weebly Pro account already as your web space provider you will be able to upload to that source as well.
Viewing some projects...
In that it is often helpful to learn from what others have done before us, let's take a few minutes to view some screencast projects already made...this short list was generated simple by searching: "screencast projects for teachers"
Working to make your own Screencast...
Let's take what we have learned today and have some fun! Decide on an area for your very first screencast, click here to get the storyboard tool, plan a bit for what you would like to accomplish, and create! It would be beneficial to try one with "blah, blah, blah" from start to finish so that you can get your questions answered right while you are here! :) More elaborate versions can be made on your own...but remember... I am an email away to help you troubleshoot!
